From the “not taking things too seriously” department, I found this time lapse app (costs $1.99 on iTunes) that allows you to set a intervalometer for the iPhone’s camera, and I started making movies of the sky while I drove around town.
Why? Exactly. And why not?
The video is in HD, if you need a closer look at the tutorial. There are lots of example videos out there. Have a look, and let us know in the comments if you’ve given mobile-phone time-lapsing a whirl.

I love it! The results are awesome.
Nice, I'll have to give that a try. Could be a perfect tool for John's Street Video group http://www.flickr.com/groups/728970@N23/
Michael, have you played around with any of the iPhone video recorder apps like Iphone Video Recorder or Cycorder? Also, have you used its sound recorder functionality for note taking during lectures?
Forgive possibly obvious questions by a non-iPhone individual.
No, I haven't done video with it. When I had a jailbreaked phone, I messed around with audio recording, but the fidelity (as you can imagine) wasn't the greatest.
I try and keep it stupid simple.
Just found out that some of the functionality described in the tutorial is limited to Quick Time Pro. I'm not sure this is the case, but I'm not surprised. From my perspective, Quick Time Pro is generally worth it.

For what it's worth, I took the video I created for this tutorial, and spun it into a larger project where I created grids of cell-phone photographs taken through my windshield. They're currently on view at Spruill Gallery in Atlanta. Here's a look.
